Of Cars and cups

Yesterday I took the boys to see the new Pixar movie, Cars. Typical fantastic Pixar production that both kids and adults will love. The theater is an older one, I am guessing it was built in the seventies. I bought a "small" soda, which must have been at least 24 ounces. This smallest soda cup wouldn't even fit in the cup holder of the theater seat.

My butt almighty

NOVEMBER 2007 UPDATE: I finally got around to watching this movie. Ugh, it is awful. If you can last until the 59th minute of the film you can see me on the left. Still, the experience was educational.

----------------

Last month I worked a couple of days on the set of Evan Almighty, the sequel to Universal Studios' Bruce Almighty. My job was to be an extra, also known in the movie business as "human furniture." Check out these photos.

Evan Almighty stars Morgan Freeman as god and The Office's Steve Carell, who is charged with building an ark in anticipation of a flood. His character has been elected to Congress, and he moves into a partially completed subdivision outside Washington. This is where Charlottesville comes in. Crozet, a hamlet just west of here, substitutes for the DC suburb.

This was my first experience as a movie extra. It was somewhat interesting -- I say "somewhat" because while you get to see how a movie is filmed, there is a LOT of waiting. Our days consisted of about a thirty second take followed by a half hour of waiting, for twelve hours. They did feed us well, however. One day we were even served soft shell crab!

There were about 120 of us, of all ages, although there were very few children. There were many college students and retired folks. Nice people, all in all, who were, like me, just curious about the process. A few people had done this with a number of films. Most amusingly, a small handful of folks thought this was their big break! Like somehow being a piece of human furniture was going to get them discovered. Jeez.

If they don't cut it during editing, my butt will appear prominently in one shot where the camera sweeps back through a crowd of gawking neighbors and points at the ark. Look for the brown shirt and green pants :)

Not dead, at least not yet

Wow. It has been more than two months since I last blogged. I'm not dead, at least not yet. IBM has been keeping me busy. I will compose something substantive soon.
